Bedugul & Baturiti: A Photo Journey Through Bali's Highlands

Drive an hour or so north from the coast and Bali changes character entirely. The heat softens, the light turns silvery, and the landscape rises into the volcanic highlands around Bedugul, Puncak and Baturiti. This is a region of crater lakes, terraced farms and forested ridges — a place where photographers slow down and travellers reach for a jacket. The Lakeside Temple of Ulun Danu Beratan

The most photographed sight in the highlands is Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, a water temple whose multi-tiered shrines appear to float on the surface of Lake Beratan. The highland climate makes Baturiti and the surrounding villages a patchwork of vegetable plots, flower farms and strawberry fields. Roadside markets overflow with produce you rarely see in the lowlands — strawberries, passion fruit, fresh vegetables and bunches of cut flowers. These bursts of colour against the green hillsides are a gift for street and travel photographers.

Mist, Light and the Best Times to Shoot

The highlands are all about atmosphere. Early mornings bring still lakes and low mist; late afternoons can deliver dramatic, fast-moving cloud. Because the region is higher and wetter than the coast, weather changes quickly — pack a rain layer and protect your gear. The golden hour after sunrise, before the clouds build, is usually the most rewarding window for the lake and temple.

Bedugul makes an easy day trip from the south or a refreshing overnight stop on a north Bali loop. Temperatures up here can dip noticeably, especially in the evenings, so bring warm layers.
