Understanding the Area
Canggu is not one place but a cluster of beach neighbourhoods, each with its own flavour. Knowing the difference saves you a lot of scooter time.
- Berawa — The polished heart of new Canggu: big beach clubs, hotels, gyms, and a dense restaurant strip. Most convenient for first-timers.
- Batu Bolong — The original Canggu, centred on the famous cafe-and-surf strip. Walkable, social, and always buzzing.
- Echo Beach (Batu Mejan) — A serious surf spot with a more relaxed, local feel and great sunset warungs.
- Pererenan — Canggu's quieter, leafier western edge, increasingly where people go to escape the crowds while staying close to the action.
Where to Stay
Accommodation spans backpacker hostels to designer villas. Berawa and Batu Bolong put you in the middle of everything; Pererenan and the inland rice-field villas trade a short ride for peace and value.

- Batu Bolong for cafe culture and easy surf access.
- Pererenan or Tumbak Bayuh for quiet villas with rice-field views, ideal for longer stays and remote workers.
Many villas come with a private pool at prices well below comparable spots elsewhere in the tropics, which is a big part of why people end up staying for weeks instead of days.
Where to Eat & Drink
Canggu may have Bali's deepest cafe and restaurant scene, with a strong bias toward health food, but plenty for everyone.
- Brunch and specialty coffee dominate mornings — smoothie bowls, sourdough, and flat whites are everywhere along Batu Bolong and Berawa.
- For local flavour and value, seek out the warungs slightly off the main strips for nasi campur, mie goreng, and grilled fish.
- Sunset beach clubs along Berawa and Echo Beach are the social highlight — arrive in the late afternoon to secure a spot.
- Evenings move to the bars and live-music venues; Canggu's nightlife is lively without quite the intensity of Seminyak's.
Things to Do
Beyond eating and lounging, Canggu is built for an active, social lifestyle.
- Learn to surf — Batu Bolong and Berawa have gentle beach breaks and dozens of surf schools; experienced surfers head to Echo Beach.
- Walk or cycle the rice-field paths and the iconic shortcut between Berawa and Batu Bolong at sunrise.
- Join a yoga class, a HIIT session, or a Muay Thai gym — Canggu's fitness scene is world-class.
- Watch the sunset at Tanah Lot, the dramatic sea temple a short ride to the north.
Getting Around
Canggu is spread out and the main roads are narrow, so a scooter is the default way to get around — only ride if you are confident and licensed, wear a helmet, and have proper insurance. Ride-hailing apps work but can be slow in the worst traffic. The airport is roughly 45 minutes to over an hour away depending on conditions, so allow generous time for departures.
When to Visit
The dry season from May to September delivers the cleanest surf and the best beach-club weather, and it is also the busiest. The shoulder months can offer a sweeter balance of decent conditions and slightly thinner crowds. Whenever you come, check current travel and visa requirements through official Indonesian channels before booking.
Is Canggu Right for You?
Come to Canggu for surf, social energy, an incredible cafe scene, and a community of long-stayers and remote workers. Skip it if traffic and crowds drain you, or if you picture Bali as pure tranquillity — for that, pair Canggu with a few quieter days in Sanur, Ubud, or the north. But for sheer momentum and fun, Berawa and Canggu remain Bali's most magnetic coast in 2026.
